Steps
Step 1: Assess Signal Penetration
Determine the distance and number of walls between your router and the front door. Because 2.4GHz signals penetrate solid objects more effectively than 5GHz, this band is generally preferred for doorbells located far from the router.
Step 2: Separate SSID Broadcasts
Disable 'Smart Connect' or 'Band Steering' in your router settings to stop the router from automatically switching the device between bands. Create distinct names for each band, such as 'Home_Wifi_2.4' and 'Home_Wifi_5', to ensure the doorbell stays on the intended frequency.
Step 3: Select the Optimal Band
Connect the doorbell to the 2.4GHz band if it is located outdoors or behind thick walls. Use the 5GHz band only if the doorbell is very close to the router and you require higher data throughput for 2K or 4K video streams.
Step 4: Adjust Channel Width
Set the 2.4GHz channel width to 20MHz rather than 40MHz. This reduces interference from neighboring networks and increases the stability of the connection in crowded residential areas.
Step 5: Pick a Non-Overlapping Channel
Avoid 'Auto' channel selection and manually set the 2.4GHz band to channel 1, 6, or 11. These are the only non-overlapping channels and will significantly reduce packet loss and latency.
Step 6: Assign a Static IP Address
Use the router's DHCP reservation menu to assign a permanent IP address to the doorbell's MAC address. This prevents connection drops during lease renewals and ensures more reliable communication with the app.
Step 7: Verify Signal Strength (RSSI)
Check the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) in the doorbell's device settings. A value between -30 dBm and -60 dBm is excellent; if the value is -70 dBm or lower, consider a Wi-Fi extender or a mesh node closer to the door.

- Avoid placing routers inside metal cabinets, as this severely degrades 2.4GHz penetration.
- If using a mesh system, place the satellite node on the wall nearest the front door to minimize latency.
